Summary

- The wasp nest, measuring 1m, surrounds a bookshelf in the office.
- The manager observed the nest's construction as fascinating.

A nature reserve manager has been working remotely after a large wasp nest was discovered in her office. The nest, measuring approximately 1 meter (3.2ft) in length, completely encased a bookshelf filled with ring binders. The manager, Eilish Rothney of the Trinity Broads at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, found the nest upon returning from fieldwork.
Initially a quarter of its current size, the nest grew significantly, with Rothney describing its construction as fascinating. The wasps built intricate layers, spreading from the floor up around the binders and shelves. The reserve plans to leave the nest undisturbed.
It is anticipated that the wasps will vacate the nest in the autumn. The worker wasps will eventually die off, while the females will seek hibernation to potentially return as queens the following spring. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust humorously noted the "new colleagues" who bypassed all office policies.
Rothney also offered advice on encountering wasps, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm to avoid provoking them. She believes that staying calm helps sense and prevents the wasps from feeling threatened.
