VTR Fights Heat: 33 Waterholes Aid Animals
5 Apr
Summary
- 33 artificial waterholes ensure water supply for wildlife.
- Grassland development supports herbivore populations.
- Measures aim to reduce human-animal conflict this summer.

Forest officials in Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) have implemented significant summer preparedness measures, focusing on maintaining water availability for wildlife. Thirty-three artificial waterholes have been established across the reserve, with regular replenishment to ensure uninterrupted supply during the peak summer months.
These water sources are strategically located in the Valmikinagar, Gonauli, and Madanpur forest areas. The initiative aims to prevent wildlife distress and reduce the risk of human-animal conflict by ensuring animals remain within their natural habitat.
Complementing the water management efforts, VTR has developed nearly 2,400 acres of grasslands. This provides a sustainable food base for herbivores, which in turn supports the predator population and the overall ecological balance of the forest.
By ensuring both adequate water and food resources within the reserve, officials anticipate a decrease in animals straying towards human settlements. These proactive steps are crucial for biodiversity conservation and protecting local communities from wildlife encounters.
