Riverbank Rubble Harms Swans; Volunteers Rally
30 Mar
Summary
- Swans developed bumblefoot from sharp riverbank debris.
- Volunteers quickly cleared five tonnes of rubble from the riverbank.
- One swan was euthanized due to the severity of its infection.

Swans in the River Crouch were found to be suffering from a severe infection known as bumblefoot, contracted from sharp debris along the riverbank. This condition, likened to walking with a marble in one's shoe, caused significant pain and infection. Michelle Collier of South Essex Wildlife Hospital described two particularly severe cases, one of which tragically required euthanasia.
In response to an urgent appeal for help, volunteers from Hullbridge gathered with tools and buckets. They worked efficiently, clearing an estimated five tonnes of rubble from the slipway area in just an hour and a half. This community action was crucial in preventing further harm to the local wildlife, with a local business providing a skip for the debris. Hullbridge Parish Council stated its awareness of the concerns and commitment to supporting wildlife welfare efforts. The Crouch Harbour Authority has been contacted for comment regarding the situation and potential long-term solutions.
