Volunteers Build Bridge for Butterfly Haven
18 Feb
Summary
- Eleven volunteers constructed a wooden bridge over a seasonal stream.
- The bridge provides access to manage a three-acre butterfly habitat.
- A £5,000 grant funded the new structure for Millhoppers Pasture.

Eleven dedicated volunteers have completed the construction of a wooden bridge, enhancing the care of a butterfly nature reserve. The new structure spans a seasonal stream at the Millhoppers Pasture site, a three-acre habitat for species including the Common Blue, Marbled White, and Ringlet butterflies.
The bridge is crucial for enabling volunteers to access and maintain different areas of the reserve, effectively preventing sections from becoming overgrown. This initiative was made possible by a £5,000 grant secured from the Dacorum Shared Prosperity Fund, replacing a previous deteriorating structure.
Chris Hilling, a volunteer joiner, described the project as a significant physical and logistical challenge for most of the team, who were undertaking bridge construction for the first time. Despite the difficulties, the experience was reported as immensely rewarding.
