14 Feb
Summary
- Central team to inspect Visakhapatnam's sanitation next month (March 2026).
- Wards face deteriorating sanitation and irregular garbage collection.
- GVMC approved hiring 250 new sanitation workers to address shortages.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is accelerating preparations for the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2026, anticipating a central assessment team's visit in March 2026. The evaluation will cover urban sanitation, including waste collection, segregation, drain maintenance, and public toilet upkeep.
Significant weightage in the 12,500-mark survey is given to ODF and GFC ratings, and citizen feedback. GVMC is launching awareness campaigns for waste segregation and improving field monitoring. However, concerns exist regarding sanitation standards in several wards, with reports of irregular garbage collection and inadequate source segregation.
Operational issues at a Gajuwaka transfer station and a shortage of sanitation staff are further complicating the situation. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg stated that efforts are focused on legacy waste processing, door-to-door collection, and C&D waste management. Garg assured that 250 newly approved sanitation workers would soon be appointed to address these critical gaps.
