Visakhapatnam's Biodiversity Park, located at Rani Chandramani Devi Government Hospital, is marking its 25th anniversary. Founded in 2001 by Mantha Rama Murty and his wife Mangathayi Mantha, the park has grown from a barren patch into a thriving botanical refuge.
This cherished green space, supported by the Dolphin Nature Conservation Society and VMRDA, is home to approximately 2,500 diverse plant species. Its collections feature desert plants, orchids, medicinal varieties, and a rare Ginkgo biloba, a living relic from the Mesozoic era.
The park functions as both a living archive and an informal classroom. It attracts students, researchers, and nature lovers, offering first-hand observation of plant adaptations. Recent additions include a butterfly garden and an enhanced Bio-Innovation Centre.
Recognizing the global need for robust plant data, the park aims to contribute to wider conservation efforts. Plans include implementing a strict code of conduct, a no-plastic policy, and penalties for littering to ensure its preservation.
