Visakhapatnam Beaches Littered After Festival
20 Sep
Summary
- Hundreds of devotees immersed Ganesh idols on the coast.
- GVMC designated multiple immersion points across the city.
- Plastic and PoP idols caused harm to marine life and environment.

The Vinayaka Chavithi festivities in Visakhapatnam concluded over the weekend, leaving the city's coastlines littered with waste. Hundreds of devotees participated in idol immersions at designated points, including Sagar Nagar and RK Beach, amidst vibrant processions.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) had established several immersion sites, equipped with necessary safety and sanitation facilities. Devotees were advised to use designated beaches and avoid fresh water due to water scarcity.
Despite these measures, many coastal stretches, including Pedda Jalaripeta beach, were found covered in idol frames, flowers, and plastic waste by Sunday morning. Sanitation workers commenced extensive clean-up operations as a result.
Environmental experts expressed concern over the recurring issue, noting that plastic and Plaster-of-Paris (PoP) idols harm marine life. They emphasized the need for public and governmental responsibility in protecting the environment, advocating for the exclusive use of clay Ganesha idols.
