14 Aug
Summary
- Vellore's Amirthi Zoo, a mini-zoo since 1967, seeks expansion.
- Collector inspected facilities like washrooms and seating areas.
- Zoo aims for more species, including carnivores for education.

Collector P.S. Leela Alex conducted an inspection at Amirthi Zoological Park on the outskirts of Vellore Corporation to assess and enhance basic amenities. Accompanied by district officials, she reviewed facilities such as seating, washrooms, and the interpretation centre. The zoo, classified as a mini-zoo since its 1967 establishment, currently occupies 25 hectares and features 17 enclosures, predominantly for reptiles and peacocks.
Officials have noted a significant increase in visitor numbers, particularly during holidays, leading to requests for additional washrooms and drinking water facilities. The Collector also emphasized the importance of acquiring more forest land to expand the zoo's area. This expansion could facilitate the inclusion of more wild species, including carnivores, to support educational initiatives and potentially upgrade the zoo's classification.
Amirthi Zoo, located in the Jawadhu Hills, boasts attractions like waterfalls, diverse bird species, snakes, crocodiles, and star tortoises, with spotted deer being the most numerous. Recent additions include animals transferred from other zoos, such as mugger crocodiles and star tortoises from Coimbatore Zoo and Sambar Deer from Vandalur Zoo. Visitor feedback highlights the need for improved access, including better road conditions and more frequent bus services.
