Vedaranyam Coast Faces Seawater Ingress Due to Strong Winds
21 May
Summary
- Strong sea winds caused seawater to enter low-lying areas in Vedaranyam.
- Breached estuary allowed saline water to intrude, threatening groundwater.
- Preventive measures were delayed, worsening the seawater intrusion impact.

Coastal areas of Vedaranyam have been impacted by strong southerly winds since Tuesday, leading to seawater breaching into low-lying regions by Wednesday. The Puthu Aaru area saw an influx of saline water through a compromised section of the Mulliyaaru estuary. This intrusion has caused significant concern among local farmers who fear adverse effects on groundwater quality and agricultural land.
The Water Resources Department typically erects an earthen bund to prevent such ingress during April. However, the construction was postponed this year due to various factors, including unfavorable weather. Following the seawater’s entry, department personnel have expedited temporary repair work, utilizing sandbags to curb the inflow. Meanwhile, salt pan operators are also implementing measures to safeguard their production fields from saltwater contamination.
Due to the rough sea conditions caused by the persistent strong winds, local fishermen operating country boats have been unable to venture out for the second consecutive day. The high winds have also resulted in frequent power outages across the region as tree branches interfere with power lines.
