Villagers Halt Sewage Plant Project Over Pollution Fears
22 Sep
Summary
- New sewage plant plan met with firm opposition from Valayambattu residents.
- Villagers fear contamination of groundwater and Palar River.
- Project stalled due to concerns over agricultural land and water resources.

A Peace Committee meeting concerning a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Valayambattu village, organized by the Vaniyambadi municipality, concluded without resolution as residents voiced firm opposition. The villagers expressed serious concerns that the proposed facility would lead to ground water pollution in surrounding farming communities and contaminate the Palar River.
Municipal officials explained that the plant was planned for a two-acre plot in Valayambattu, located downstream from Vaniyambadi town, after considering over 20 alternative sites. They stated the location would facilitate easier wastewater flow from the town and ensure recycled water could be used for irrigation.
However, residents, representing over 4,000 families in the Alangayam Panchayat Union, whose primary occupations are agriculture and weaving, argued that the plant's proximity to the river would degrade water quality. They highlighted the importance of the identified land for cattle grazing and rainwater storage, crucial for preventing village inundation during monsoons.
Currently, wastewater from Vaniyambadi flows into local lakes and ponds, causing pollution. The proposed STP aimed to address this by treating sewage and preventing illegal discharge into drains and water bodies, thereby improving environmental conditions in Vaniyambadi town.
