Fishermen's Harbour Work Resumes in Vaniyakudi

District Collector M. Prathap confirmed on Friday that fishing harbour work in Vaniyakudi will continue, following recommendations from a review team. This assurance was given during a fishermen's grievance redress meeting held in Nagercoil.
Fishermen presented several issues, including a demand for a ban on private tourist boat operations in Manakudi. They also requested timely issuance of family and membership cards. Additionally, proposals for extending the groyne at Kovalam and obtaining exemptions for fishermen's residences under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations were discussed.
The Collector affirmed that steps are being taken to prohibit private tourist boat rides in Manakudi. Camps will be organized for membership card distribution, and family cards will be issued based on seniority. A proposal for the Kovalam groyne extension has been sent to the relevant authorities.
Preventing sewage from Colachel municipality from entering the AVM Canal is a priority, with measures to be implemented. Furthermore, the Collector stated that strict action will be taken against individuals involved in smuggling subsidised kerosene intended for fishermen.
Discussions also covered the refixing of rents for shops at Thengaipattinam fishing harbour and ensuring adequate berthing facilities for country boats. The meeting saw the presence of District Revenue Officer M. Velumani and Deputy Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare K.T. Gopinath, among other officials.
