20 Oct
Summary
- Cars parked on Vaigai riverbed near Kallazhagar's entry point.
- Madurai MP flagged the issue, leading to official intervention.
- Damaged gate is being repaired to prevent future parking.
The riverbed of the Vaigai River in Madurai, near where Kallazhagar makes his ceremonial entry, was recently utilized as a parking lot for patrons of adjacent textile businesses. This recurring issue prompted swift action from district authorities after Madurai MP Su Venkatesan brought it to their attention.
Despite earlier removal of vehicles, photographs emerged showing cars parked again and the entrance gate left open. Officials, including the public works department chief engineer, initially denied opening the gate. However, subsequent inspection revealed the main gate was damaged and all vehicles were subsequently removed.
District Collector Nishant Krishna confirmed the inspection and directed the Madurai corporation to repair and secure the damaged gate. MP Venkatesan welcomed the intervention but insisted on identifying those responsible for the gate's damage through CCTV footage. He also questioned the water resources department's lack of a formal complaint and urged for a lasting resolution to prevent similar incidents.
