Sewage Chokes Uyyakondan Canal: Residents Demand Action
8 Feb
Summary
- Uyyakondan Canal in Tiruchi suffers from sewage discharge at 32 points.
- Residents face foul odors and mosquito menace due to pollution.
- Civic body plans sewage treatment plants and UGD project to curb pollution.

Residents in Tiruchi's Palakkarai area are raising alarms over the persistent discharge of untreated sewage into the Uyyakondan Canal. This pollution occurs along a 15-km stretch within the city, with approximately 32 identified entry points from commercial and residential buildings. The contaminated water has transformed the once vital irrigation channel into a heavily polluted drain, causing significant olfactory and health concerns for the local community.
Environmental activists are demanding continuous monitoring and stringent action to halt the flow of untreated wastewater. Meanwhile, the local civic body has begun efforts to permanently block entry points in high-discharge areas like Cantonment and Bheema Nagar. Plans are also underway to establish sewage treatment plants along the canal banks to aid in its restoration.
The ongoing commissioning of an underground drainage (UGD) project is expected to significantly alleviate the pollution. Civic officials anticipate that once operational, the UGD network will divert wastewater from open drains, preventing it from entering the Uyyakondan Canal and contributing to its revival.
