23 Apr
Summary
- Over 260 forest fire alerts issued as summer heat intensifies.
- 144 fires have affected 85 hectares since the season began.
- Residents report breathing and eye issues, straining local health centers.

Uttarakhand is facing a severe forest fire season, with the Forest Survey of India issuing at least 260 alerts on Wednesday. The dry summer heat has exacerbated incidents across several districts, including Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi, and Bageshwar. Since the season commenced on February 15, the state has recorded 144 forest fires, affecting approximately 85 hectares of forest land.
The majority of the damage has occurred in the Garhwal region, with 69 hectares impacted. The Kumaon region and wildlife administration areas have also seen significant effects. In hill districts like Bageshwar and Almora, residents with pre-existing respiratory and eye conditions are experiencing heightened discomfort due to smoke.
Local health centers are seeing a rise in patients presenting with breathing difficulties and eye allergies. Health experts warn that fine particulate matter in smoke can lead to serious health issues. Authorities are acting on each alert, though some may be false alarms or related to other burning activities. Residents are advised to take precautions like wearing masks.
