19 Jul
Summary
- Eight eco-tourism sites are being developed across Uttarakhand's districts.
- The initiative is inspired by the successful Jabarkhet Nature Reserve model.
- New destinations will offer nature-based activities and local employment.
The Uttarakhand forest department is planning the development of eight new eco-tourism sites across districts including Tehri, Nainital, and Dehradun. This initiative takes inspiration from the successful Jabarkhet Nature Reserve near Mussoorie, which serves as a model for self-sustained conservation and eco-tourism.
The identified sites, located near existing forest rest houses, will be developed in phases. The goal is to establish slow, nature-based tourism destinations offering experiences such as birdwatching, trekking, and wellness. These locations will include Naina-Kilbury and Mahesh Khan in Nainital, Kaudia in New Tehri, Binsar in Almora, and Benog in Mussoorie, among others.
This project aims to promote low-impact tourism and improve the visitor experience in forest areas. Additionally, it is expected to generate income opportunities for local youth through homestays and guiding services. The department is studying the Jabarkhet model to create site-specific action plans, focusing on preserving ecological balance and fostering sustainable livelihoods.
