Preliminary data indicates that many farmers in Telangana are using 50-100% more urea than scientifically recommended levels for various crops, stemming from a mistaken belief that it boosts yields.
This overuse leads to harmful chemical residues in food, potentially causing severe health issues such as cancer, kidney diseases, and diminished fertility. The accumulation of these residues in soil degrades its quality and nutrient availability, consequently increasing pest attacks and necessitating further pesticide use.
Research, including a 2022 UN Environment Assembly report, highlights the link between crops grown with high urea content and reduced fertility in animals, with similar risks for humans. Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University will conduct in-depth research on the human health impacts of excessive urea.
