UP to Recycle 100% Wastewater by 2035
25 Mar
Summary
- UP aims to safely reuse 50% wastewater by 2030.
- Policy shifts from disposal to resource recovery.
- Wastewater reuse is vital for conserving freshwater.

Uttar Pradesh has adopted the Safe Reuse of Treated Water Policy, 2026, aiming for the safe reuse of 50% of its wastewater by 2030 and achieving 100% reuse by 2035. This policy signifies a move from linear wastewater disposal to innovative water resource recovery.
The state is addressing the growing strain on freshwater resources, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and groundwater extraction. Climate change further compounds water scarcity concerns, making wastewater reuse a necessity.
Treated wastewater, meeting regulatory standards, can be safely employed in industries, construction, and ecosystems, thus alleviating pressure on finite freshwater reserves. This approach promotes a circular economy by viewing used water as a valuable resource.
The implementation will occur in phases, starting with reuse for horticulture and irrigation, expanding to industries and railways, and eventually introducing dual-pipe systems for households by the third phase. This policy is expected to foster new technologies and markets for large-scale wastewater reuse in Uttar Pradesh for non-drinking purposes, reducing dependence on freshwater.
