Uttar Pradesh Drones Fight River Pollution
14 Jun
Summary
- Drone surveys cover over 400 km of major rivers in Uttar Pradesh.
- Advanced geospatial technology aids pollution monitoring and drain remediation.
- The initiative aims for zero discharge into rivers, boosting rural development.

Uttar Pradesh is implementing a comprehensive action plan, utilizing drone survey models across multiple districts to achieve zero discharge into its rivers. Drone surveys have already covered over 400 kilometers of the Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Varuna, and Pandu rivers, injecting new momentum into rejuvenation efforts.
Surveys conducted in major cities like Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Varanasi are enabling precise assessments of river conditions and identification of pollution sources. Kanpur, Varanasi, and Prayagraj are among the districts set to benefit first from this initiative, with a detailed action plan being prepared to ensure zero discharge.
Advanced geospatial technologies support evidence-based planning under the Namami Gange Programme, generating precise datasets integrated into a live GIS-based Drain Dashboard. This dashboard offers 2D and 3D visualization for basin-level pollution monitoring and prioritizes drain remediation measures, coupling LiDAR data with drone survey visuals.
The state emphasizes clean rivers and tangible community benefits. This drone-based rejuvenation plan aims not only to restore rivers but also to create opportunities for cleanliness, employment, and environmental protection in rural communities.
