Chromium Taint: UP Groundwater Glows Dangerously
16 Oct
Summary
- Groundwater in Uttar Pradesh districts shows dangerous chromium (VI) contamination.
- Villagers face severe health risks due to years of industrial waste dumping.
- National Green Tribunal issued notices to 14 authorities for inaction.

Decades of industrial waste dumping have severely contaminated groundwater with hexavalent chromium in parts of Uttar Pradesh. This contamination poses significant health risks to villagers exposed to the toxic, discolored water. Despite numerous complaints and prior court interventions, government actions to identify affected areas, supply safe drinking water, and provide healthcare have been notably slow and insufficient.
The National Green Tribunal has initiated a suo motu case concerning these environmental concerns and the perceived gaps in governmental response. In a recent order dated October 5, the NGT issued notices to fourteen key authorities. These include the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, the National Mission for Clean Ganga, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, demanding detailed responses.
Concerns are heightened by evidence that many villages experiencing bright yellow groundwater or located near chemical dump sites are not officially recognized as affected areas. This suggests the full scale of the problem may be considerably larger than currently documented, indicating a potentially widespread environmental crisis requiring urgent attention.
