Heatwave Hits UP: Animals Get Special Cool-Downs
22 May
Summary
- Animals at Etawah Safari Park and Kanpur Zoo receive special cooling measures.
- Khas mats, desert coolers, and ACs are used to protect lions and cubs.
- Modified diets and water availability are crucial for animal well-being.

In response to extreme heatwave conditions with temperatures surpassing 44 degrees Celsius across parts of Uttar Pradesh, Etawah Safari Park and Kanpur Zoo have introduced comprehensive cooling strategies for their animal residents. At Etawah Safari Park, Asiatic lions are being shielded with khas mats continuously sprinkled with water, alongside desert coolers in their night enclosures. Air conditioners are actively utilized in the breeding center for lionesses and cubs.
Fogger and shower systems are operating continuously throughout the safari park and animal enclosures to maintain cooler ambient temperatures. Additional coolers have been installed for bears and leopards, while humidity levels are managed in lion enclosures to prevent heat stress in older animals. Ponds for deer are consistently refilled with tubewell water. To minimize exposure to the afternoon sun, safari timings have been revised, with visitor entry now commencing at 6:30 am.
Kanpur Zoo has also deployed extensive cooling arrangements, featuring sprinklers in all enclosures to keep the soil and surroundings moist and cool. Beyond environmental controls, zoo authorities are modifying animal diets to include seasonal and cooling food items, aiming to prevent dehydration and support their health. Notably, the zoo's rhinoceros, Krishna, has been observed enjoying showers under the sprinklers.
