UN: Exceeding 1.5C Warming Is Now Inevitable

A United Nations report has concluded that containing global temperature rise to within 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels is no longer feasible. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report states that the primary challenge is now minimizing any temperature 'overshoot' and determining if a return to the 1.5C range is possible later. However, even the most favorable projections anticipate a peak warming of at least 1.8 degrees Celsius.
This marks the first time an authoritative report has declared a breach of the 1.5C threshold inevitable. Previous assessments, including those by the IPCC, suggested a narrow window of opportunity. While the 1.5C mark is an arbitrary scientific threshold, crossing it is expected to intensify the severity and frequency of climate impacts like extreme weather events.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, striving for 1.5 degrees Celsius. Although the annual average temperature briefly exceeded 1.5C in 2024, scientists consider long-term trends, not single-year anomalies. A return to below 1.5C warming is uncertain and would heavily rely on unproven carbon dioxide removal technologies.
