Record UK Rain Soaks Katesbridge, Affecting Lives
21 Feb
Summary
- Katesbridge experienced over 40 consecutive days of rain.
- January and February brought record-breaking rainfall to Northern Ireland.
- Persistent wet weather impacts daily life, businesses, and mood.

Katesbridge, County Down, has experienced a record-breaking deluge, with over 40 consecutive days of rain impacting the region. January alone was the wettest month in nearly 150 years for Northern Ireland, with Katesbridge recording 185.4mm of rain in February, far exceeding the monthly average of 66.2mm.
This prolonged wet spell has led to significant disruption. Childcare manager Stacyann Strain noted that children have been kept indoors, impacting their activities and moods. Local photographer Jonathan Sterritt reported fewer bookings as outdoor work becomes unfeasible. The weather has also worsened road conditions, causing localized flooding and delays.
Experts suggest that prolonged periods of dull, wet weather, and especially the accompanying cloud cover, can negatively affect mood and potentially worsen Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While Katesbridge is facing extreme conditions, similar relentless rain has been reported in Cardinham, Cornwall, and Valentia, County Kerry, Ireland. Practical steps like using light boxes and maintaining sleep routines are recommended to counteract the effects of reduced daylight and poor weather.
