A new care home, Red Kite Meadows in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, is poised to be the largest in the UK built to the Passivhaus energy efficiency standard. This development aims to significantly reduce annual energy bills for its residents, potentially by up to 90%.
The Passivhaus standard ensures buildings have high insulation levels, triple glazing, and utilize internal heat sources, minimizing the need for heating or cooling. Red Kite Meadows features 88 one and two-bedroom apartments for those over 55, a short-term respite care facility for adults with disabilities, and a residential home.
Incorporating 185 solar panels and carefully shielded windows, the home also boasts mechanical ventilation and heat recovery units and triple-glazed windows. It adheres to dementia-friendly standards and aligns with the authority's 2030 carbon neutrality goals.
This project represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainable elder care, ensuring excellent indoor comfort while achieving very low energy demand. It is particularly significant given rising global energy prices, offering a proven model for future developments.
