UK's Fastest Eroding Cliffs Vanish Yearly
2 Mar
Summary
- Cliffs retreat approximately 4.5 meters annually, a national record.
- Thousands of properties face coastal erosion by century's end.
- Erosion protects southern towns by feeding sediment southward.

The cliffs at Covehithe are experiencing one of the fastest erosion rates in the UK, retreating approximately 4.5 meters each year according to the latest Shoreline Management Plan. This dramatic land loss contributes to sediment that protects southern towns like Southwold. National projections indicate a significant threat, with around 10,100 properties at risk of coastal erosion by the end of the 21st century.
Climate change exacerbates this issue, as rising sea levels and more intense storms accelerate coastal erosion. The Environment Agency's assessments highlight a potential increase in properties at risk of flooding from 2.4 million to 3.1 million by mid-century. Fourteen properties were recently issued evacuation notices due to imminent collapse, underscoring the immediate danger.
