Situated at least 37 km off the north Essex and south Suffolk coastlines, the new facility will comprise up to 79 turbines and span 28 sq km across two seabed areas. This development is set to generate in excess of 300MW, contributing substantially to the nation's energy security.
The project, owned by an RWE-led consortium, will be adjacent to the existing Galloper wind farm. It involves the installation of offshore substations and cabling, with an onshore substation at Sandy Point connecting to the National Grid. The Planning Inspectorate highlighted the project's necessity for energy security and the urgent need for low-carbon energy sources.
RWE anticipates that the Five Estuaries wind farm will foster long-term investment in the East of England, creating hundreds of skilled jobs during construction and operation. The company views this development as a key contributor to the UK's transition towards a decarbonized electricity system and securing domestically generated clean power.
