Summary
- Wildfire in Suffolk expands to 140 football pitches.
- Half of England and Wales officially under drought conditions.
- Fire service advises against disposable barbecues due to fire risk.

A significant wildfire in Suffolk has grown to cover an area equivalent to 140 football pitches. Fire services across the UK are implementing preventative measures as the country grapples with drought conditions. Shaun Milton, group manager for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, anticipates his crews will respond to up to 1,000 fires this summer. He strongly advises the public against using disposable barbecues on dry ground, suggesting instead that people visit local pubs or restaurants.
Much of the UK is experiencing drought, with half of England and around half of Wales officially declared to be in this state. This situation has been exacerbated by a dry spring and successive heatwaves, straining water resources. The UK Health Security Agency estimates that over 2,800 heat-related deaths occurred during heatwaves in May and June. Emergency responders are working tirelessly to contain the Suffolk wildfire, which has forced evacuations, with the blaze potentially burning for another 48 hours.
