Record Inspections Expose Over 3,000 Water Company Failures
31 Mar
Summary
- Over 10,000 inspections revealed more than 3,000 environmental breaches.
- Water companies received over 3,000 demands for infrastructure upgrades.
- Sewage discharge into rivers and seas reached 1.8 million hours in 2025.

The Environment Agency (EA) has reported over 3,000 environmental breaches by water companies, stemming from a record number of inspections conducted this financial year. These inspections, exceeding 10,000, covered treatment works, sewage pumping stations, and storm overflows. Failures included equipment malfunctions, substandard effluent quality, and inadequate network management.
Enhanced regulatory oversight, supported by increased funding and 500 new staff, led to 22% of site visits identifying issues, a slight decrease from the previous year. The EA issued more than 3,000 improvement orders, demanding repairs and infrastructure upgrades. Despite these efforts, campaign groups highlight that in 2025, water companies discharged over 1.8 million hours of sewage into waterways, rendering most of England's inland bathing sites unsafe.
Calls are growing for more robust accountability, including swifter prosecutions and higher fines for persistent offenders. The upcoming Water Reform Bill presents an opportunity to potentially restructure water company ownership and prioritize environmental cleanup using bill payers' money.
