Waste Crime Fight Lacking, Lords Warn
17 Dec
Summary
- Government's waste crime efforts deemed insufficient by a House of Lords committee.
- Massive waste dump in Oxfordshire raises concerns for River Cherwell.
- Environment Agency disputes claims of withholding information on waste sites.

The effectiveness of the government's approach to combating waste crime has been sharply criticized by Baroness Shas Sheehan, chair of a House of Lords committee. She informed the environment secretary that current efforts are "not sufficient to deal with the problem," particularly following the discovery of an enormous waste dump in Oxfordshire.
The "mountain of waste," stretching up to 150m long and 6m high near Kidlington, has raised significant concerns among local residents about potential damage to the River Cherwell. Baroness Sheehan expressed shock at the scale of the dumping and disappointment with the government's response, stating that their current actions are clearly ineffective.
While the Environment Agency stated cleanup preparations were underway due to exceptional circumstances and overriding public imperative, they have disputed claims of inaccuracy regarding their engagement with the committee's inquiry. The agency maintains it responded comprehensively and will continue to work with the committee.
