UK Braces for Summer Travel Chaos
18 Jul
Summary
- 14.1 million motorists expected on UK roads this weekend.
- Temperatures to drop after prolonged heatwave, reaching 24C.
- Nearly 499 wildfires recorded in England and Wales so far.

Millions of Britons are embarking on summer holidays this weekend, prompting significant road travel. The RAC anticipates 14.1 million motorists will undertake journeys between Friday and Sunday, marking the second-highest figure since 2016. Saturday is predicted to be the peak travel day with 3.8 million journeys. Major hubs like the Port of Dover are preparing for substantial volumes.
The travel boom occurs as the UK experiences a shift from a prolonged heatwave, which saw temperatures exceeding 30C for 13 consecutive days. Cooler weather is expected, with highs around 24C forecast for major cities over the weekend.
Despite the cooling temperatures, the dry conditions have heightened the risk of wildfires. Nearly 499 wildfires have been recorded in England and Wales between January 1 and July 16. This figure, while lower than last year, remains significantly higher than in recent years.
Central and south-east England have endured the longest rain-free spell this century, with 14 consecutive days of zero recorded rainfall. Scientists warn that climate change is disrupting rainfall patterns, leading to increasingly extreme conditions and dry vegetation.
The National Fire Chiefs Council urges the public to help prevent wildfires by safely disposing of cigarettes, taking litter home, and avoiding disposable barbecues. Several hosepipe bans have already been announced in southern England due to intense strain on water supplies. Reservoir levels are below the long-term average, prompting increased drought response activities.
