UK Soil Contaminated: "Highest Levels" Found
25 Mar
Summary
- Extremely high levels of banned forever chemicals found in Cheshire soil.
- Testing revealed concentrations over 12,000 times UK recommended levels.
- Council investigation underway into toxic waste near former factory.

Recent sampling in Helsby, Cheshire, has uncovered extremely high levels of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), a banned group of "forever chemicals." Testing conducted in 2024 found concentrations over 12,000 times the recommended UK limit in soil near a former cable factory. These chemicals, historically used for their fire resistance, are linked to serious health concerns and pose a threat to marine wildlife.
Cheshire West and Chester Council confirmed it has launched an investigation under the Environmental Protection Act. This follows findings from independent sampling that indicated significant PCB leakage. The landowner, Balfour Beatty, has commissioned its own report, which has been submitted to the council, though its release is being contested due to commercial sensitivity and potential prejudice to the ongoing investigation.
Further investigation is also underway at a second site, a former landfill in Alvanley, where PCB waste from the factory was allegedly dumped. Liquid with an oily film has been observed trickling from the landfill area. Despite past legal action regarding pollution from this site, remediation has not occurred due to a lack of funds. Residents and local officials are urging for swift and thorough action to address the contamination risks.
