UK Beaches: Sewage Spills Become Daily Worry

Checking for sewage spills has become a daily concern for swimmers on East Sussex beaches, akin to monitoring the weather forecast. Jo Armstrong, a 75-year-old resident, shared her frustration that water quality at her usual spot in Seaford has been too polluted for swimming for the past week. This situation arises as Friends of the Earth recently ranked UK water companies for environmental damage, with further sewage leaks emerging.

Hildi Mitchell, who runs a program teaching open water swimming, notes that pollution is deterring people from sea swimming, citing concerns about illness. She highlights that for families with limited summer activities, swimming should be a free and accessible option, but pollution makes it problematic. Greg Veros, a long-time Brighton resident, now prefers the local outdoor swimming pool after falling ill from suspected sewage pollution a few years ago.

Despite the availability of the pool, Mitchell emphasizes that nothing replaces the freedom of swimming in the sea. Anna Field, who moved to Brighton specifically to swim regularly, also finds checking for sewage alerts essential. Although dry weather has reduced spills this summer, she feels a sense of anger that pollution prevents access to the ocean, an experience she likens to being unable to walk in a park due to rain, but with human blame involved.
