Grid Offers Unlock 700+ Clean Energy Projects
10 Jun
Summary
- Over 700 clean energy projects secured grid connection offers.
- These projects represent nearly 60% of needed 2030 clean power goals.
- Speculative 'zombie projects' were removed to clear the backlog.

The National Energy System Operator (Neso) has issued grid connection offers to over 700 clean energy projects across Great Britain since the start of 2026. This achievement follows a two-year effort to resolve significant delays that threatened the nation's clean power goals.
These projects, which include wind and solar farms, battery storage, and hydro plans, represent nearly 60% of the schemes required to meet the government's objective of a virtually carbon-free grid by 2030. This progress was made possible by clearing hundreds of speculative applications that had created a backlog in the connection queue.
Under Neso's revised rules, projects must now meet stricter criteria, such as securing planning permission and land rights, ensuring only those highly likely to be delivered are offered grid connections. Energy Minister Michael Shanks highlighted that upgrading the grid and easing connections will help shield consumers from volatile fossil fuel prices and marks a critical step in reform.
Kayte O'Neill, Neso's chief operating officer, confirmed that these reforms are yielding tangible results, providing developers with the investment certainty needed for economic growth and a reliable, clean energy system for Britain. The focus now shifts to the next phase of delivery for these crucial projects.
