UK Freediver Captures Nocturnal Marine Wonders

Freediver Iestyn Morgan is shedding light on the captivating world of UK marine life after dark, using vibrant TikTok videos to showcase his discoveries. Morgan, a geography student from Pembrokeshire, was inspired to try freediving in April 2025 after seeing a video online. He now actively documents the nocturnal species that become bolder when the sun sets, including squid, cuttlefish, and cat sharks.

Morgan emphasizes that remarkable marine diversity is readily available in UK waters, contrary to popular belief. One of his most striking encounters involved about 50 squid circling him, attracted by his torchlight. He also noted a massive swarm of mauve stingers, a venomous jellyfish typically found in the Mediterranean, which he sees as a stark indicator of climate change.

The freediver points to rising sea temperatures, noting that world oceans broke temperature records daily throughout 2024. This warming trend, along with widespread plastic pollution, concerns Morgan. He believes these environmental issues are not discussed enough and advocates for greater awareness and public discussion on conservation efforts.

Freediving itself carries significant health risks, and the British Freediving Association advises taking courses with qualified instructors and never diving alone. Morgan states he is aware of these risks and always dives with a companion, ensuring he does not swim too far from shore.
