UK Bottle Deposit Scheme: Get 20p Back!
24 Apr
Summary
- A flat 20p deposit will be applied to all in-scope containers.
- Shoppers will receive 20p per bottle or can returned.
- The scheme aims to reduce litter and increase recycling rates.

The UK is set to implement a new Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) starting October 1, 2027, with a flat 20p deposit on all in-scope containers. This means consumers will receive 20p for every plastic bottle or aluminum can they return to designated points, such as supermarkets. This confirmation provides welcome clarity for businesses preparing for the scheme's rollout.
The DRS aims to combat the significant issue of litter and low recycling rates, with billions of plastic bottles and cans used annually in the UK. Charity research indicates these items constitute a substantial portion of litter. The scheme is expected to mirror successful initiatives already operating in over 50 countries globally.
England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland will include PET plastic, steel, and aluminum containers between 150ml and 3 litres, excluding glass due to safety and storage concerns. Wales will initially include glass bottles without a deposit, planning a separate reuse scheme. Retailers must manage the deposit collection and refund process, offering returns via cash, voucher, or card at return points.
This government initiative is committed to cleaning up the environment and ending a throwaway culture. Deposit return schemes are proven to reduce litter and increase recycling rates, which have stagnated for years. The reforms are anticipated to create thousands of jobs and significant investment in the recycling sector.
