Summary
- 98% of councils say fly-tipping is a problem, 70% call it 'major'

As of November 10th, 2025, the UK is facing a severe fly-tipping crisis, with 98% of local councils admitting it is a problem in their area. According to a recent survey, 70% of councils now consider illegal waste dumping a 'major problem', and more than half (54%) feel they will never be able to get the situation under control.
The crisis has escalated over the past year, with over half of councils reporting an increase in fly-tipping incidents. Costing up to £150 million annually, the issue is diverting crucial funds away from vital public services like schools. Worryingly, research by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has found that 40% of fly-tipping incidents are now linked to 'rogue white van' operators seeking to make a quick profit by illegally dumping household waste.
To combat the growing problem, Keep Britain Tidy is launching a new campaign to warn the public about these waste criminals, who often lure unsuspecting residents with cheap rubbish removal deals on social media. The charity is urging the public to be more vigilant and carry out basic checks when hiring someone to remove their waste, to ensure it is disposed of legally.
