UAE Launches $6B Solar and Battery Project, Aiming for 2027 Completion

In a significant move towards renewable energy, the United Arab Emirates has initiated the construction of a Dh22 billion ($5.99 billion) solar and battery storage project. The foundation stone for this ambitious initiative was laid on October 24, 2025, in the presence of Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Martyrs' Affairs.
Developed by Masdar in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project aims to deliver 1GW of clean, continuous baseload power at a competitive tariff. Once completed in 2027, the project is expected to offset 5.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, marking a significant step towards the UAE's sustainability goals.
The project is set to become the world's largest and most advanced solar and battery storage facility, featuring a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant and a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) advanced battery storage system. This groundbreaking initiative will utilize a range of technologies, including virtual power plant models, grid-forming capabilities, and AI-enhanced forecasting, to enhance efficiency and reliability.
According to Masdar's CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, this project demonstrates the feasibility of continuous renewable power and addresses the challenge of intermittency, paving the way for further advancements in the global energy transition.
