Twyford Recycling Permit Pulled After Fire Risk Found
20 Jun
Summary
- Twyford Recycling's permit was suspended immediately by the Environment Agency.
- Fire and pollution risks were identified at the Chichester site.
- The company must remove all tyres by July 2nd.

A tyre recycling business, Twyford Recycling, located in Chichester, West Sussex, has had its operating permit suspended by the Environment Agency. This action was taken immediately following an inspection on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
The agency cited serious concerns regarding fire prevention and the risk of water and air pollution. Waste tyres were found stored outside designated areas, hindering effective fire management. Inadequate fire water accessibility was also a significant concern.
Concerns were raised that smoke from a potential fire could spread towards the A27 and Chichester. Furthermore, there was a risk of the River Lavant and groundwater being polluted by firefighting water runoff.
Twyford Recycling Limited has been instructed to remove all loose, shredded, and baled tyres from the site by 18:00 BST on July 2, 2026. The company has two months to appeal this decision.
