Summary
- Georgia Laurie punched a crocodile to save her twin sister Melissa in Mexico.
- Melissa survived a crocodile attack but contracted sepsis in hospital.
- The sisters now support a crocodile conservation project in Belize.

In a remarkable display of courage, Georgia Laurie, 33, saved her twin sister Melissa from a deadly crocodile attack in Mexico back in 2021. While swimming in a river, the sisters were attacked by the reptile, which attempted to drag Melissa underwater. Georgia's swift action in punching the crocodile's jaw allowed her to rescue her sister.
Melissa's survival was precarious; she contracted sepsis from wounds sustained during the attack and required extensive hospital treatment. More than three years later, the bravery shown by Georgia was recognized with a King's Gallantry Medal. The sisters, having overcome their trauma, are now advocates for crocodile conservation.
They are supporting the Crocodile Research Coalition in Belize, a non-profit organization focused on protecting species like the American Crocodile and Morelet's Crocodile, which face threats from pollution and habitat destruction. Their experience has fueled a passion to help reverse the declining populations of these reptiles.
