Tuvalu, a Pacific nation on the front lines of the climate crisis, will host a special meeting of world leaders in the lead-up to the Cop31 summit. This preparatory gathering is scheduled to take place in Fiji in October. The Cop31 summit itself will be held in Antalya, Turkey, on November 11-12.
Turkey's climate minister, Murat Kurum, who is the president-designate for Cop31, has expressed full confidence in Australia's energy and emissions minister, Chris Bowen, to lead crucial negotiations. Bowen will hold exclusive authority over these discussions, which aim to advance the fight against climate change and accelerate the irreversible clean energy transition.
In related discussions, Germany's state secretary for environment and climate action, Jochen Flasbarth, met with Bowen in Canberra. Flasbarth stressed that current global crises, including conflicts, should not distract from the urgent need for climate action. He advocated for faster electrification in heavy transport, manufacturing, and household technologies, highlighting it as the essential path forward.
Sally Higgins, a farmer from Darling Downs, has been named the summit's youth climate champion. The Cop31 talks will be guided by the core principles of dialogue, consensus, and action.
