Trichy Residents Buy Water Despite Full Cauvery Flow
22 Sep
Summary
- Residents buy water as corporation reduces supply duration.
- Water tankers used for drinking water despite Cauvery flow.
- Corporation promises to rectify supply issues shortly.
Residents in Trichy are experiencing a severe drinking water shortage, compelling them to rely on private water tankers despite the substantial flow of Cauvery water past the city. This situation has persisted for about a week in most areas, and a month in some parts of Trichy. Residents typically receive piped water for 60-90 minutes daily, but this duration has been drastically cut, even when the Cauvery riverbed, the source of drinking water, was dry.
Areas including Junction, Central bus stand, Senthaneerpuram, Puthur, and Woraiyur have reported erratic supply and reduced water pressure. This has led to substantial expenses for gated communities, with some spending up to Rs 3,000 daily for tanker water, despite paying annual water taxes. A CPM councillor highlighted the reduced supply time to just 30 minutes, a concern exacerbated by the current sultry weather and high demand.
Corporation officials have acknowledged the problems, citing seepages in some areas that are being addressed. They assured that the duration of water supply will gradually be increased. While collector wells yield over 160 million liters per day (mld), sources suggest that reduced inflow into the Kollidam river is impacting overall yield, even though Cauvery's inflow and yield are sufficient.
