Mayor Inspects T'puram Housing: Residents Fume Over Neglect
20 May
Summary
- Mayor V V Rajesh inspected rehabilitation flats amid resident complaints.
- Fisher families report unsafe, unhygienic conditions and structural damage.
- Waste dumping into the sea severely impacts fishing and marine life.

Mayor V V Rajesh recently inspected rehabilitation flat complexes in Mathippuram, T'puram, responding to urgent complaints from residents about deteriorating living conditions and waste management. The visit, prompted by a petition from local councillors and residents, focused on housing colonies at Valiyaparambu, Mailanchikkal, and Mathippuram.
Fisher families residing in these complexes voiced serious concerns over unsafe and unhygienic living environments. They reported damaged structures, leaking walls, poor sanitation facilities, and a general lack of maintenance. Many expressed frustration over years of unaddressed complaints, attributing them to previous local administrations.
Further compounding their issues, fishermen highlighted how waste discharged from nearby hotels into the sea is polluting coastal waters. This pollution is directly affecting fishing activities and the marine environment, leading to demands for immediate intervention to halt waste dumping and improve local sanitation.
The Mathippuram and Muttathara rehabilitation projects, part of the government's Punargeham scheme, were established to resettle coastal families displaced by sea erosion and the Vizhinjam port development. The corporation has plans to establish a sewage treatment plant at Mathippuram to manage septage disposal, and the mayor pledged a detailed study to resolve all reported problems.
