Lancashire Park Becomes High-Speed 'Rat Run'

Concerns are mounting over excessive vehicle speeds in Lancashire's Towneley Park, with drivers reportedly using its roads as a shortcut and reaching speeds as high as 78mph in a 20mph zone. This dangerous driving behavior poses significant risks to park visitors, including pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, while diminishing the enjoyment of this public green space.

The park's roads, Deer Park Road and Towneley Holmes Road, have seen increased traffic volume, with a recent survey counting over 22,000 vehicles in a single week. The 20mph limit, in place since 2010, is largely unenforced by police, leading to a significant minority of drivers exceeding it, some by nearly four times the limit.

Burnley Council is proposing to consult on introducing traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and raised crossing points. These interventions aim to reduce vehicle speeds, deter shortcutting, and ensure Towneley Park remains a safe and tranquil place for recreation and community enjoyment.
