Renowned Scientist Exposes Motives Behind Climate Inaction
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Top scientist Katharine Hayhoe says climate change denial is not about science
- Opposition to climate action is driven by protecting wealth and power of fossil fuel interests
- World has moved from 5°C to 2.7°C of projected warming since Paris Agreement

In September 2025, renowned climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe, the chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy, spoke out against the unscientific opposition to climate change policies. Hayhoe, who has been named one of the 100 most influential people on Earth, explained that the real objection to addressing climate change is not about the science, but rather about protecting the accumulated power and wealth of fossil fuel interests.
Hayhoe noted that since the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world has made progress in reducing the projected global temperature rise by the end of the century, from 5°C down to around 2.7°C. However, she stated that "tackling climate change would be beneficial for just about every human on the planet and all of the non-human life as well."
The scientist criticized those who claim climate change is a "con job," saying their real motivation is to avoid having to fix the problem, as it would threaten the dominance of the fossil fuel industry. Hayhoe argued that rather than denying the science, these individuals should simply admit they do not want to address the issue.
