The sacred hills of Tiruvannamalai are set for a significant ecological restoration aimed at mitigating landslide risks and addressing environmental degradation. The Green Tamil Nadu Mission, directed by Anwardeen, is spearheading this comprehensive initiative. The project will cover 962 hectares, utilizing a 'ridge-to-valley' strategy starting from the hilltops and moving downwards.
Employing advanced techniques like satellite mapping and drone surveys, the project will prioritize stabilizing the most vulnerable areas in its initial phase. Subsequent stages will focus on watershed treatment and the repair of water-harvesting structures, including the restoration of five ponds to increase rainwater absorption and storage capacity by approximately 3,341 cubic metres.
With an estimated cost of ₹10 crore, the project allocates substantial funds towards planting native trees, restoring the natural ecology, and constructing check dams and trenches to manage water runoff. Additionally, resources are dedicated to fire prevention, grassland restoration, and slope stabilization using natural methods.
Anwardeen envisions this project serving as an eco-model for fragile hill area protection in Tamil Nadu, integrating ecological repair, biodiversity conservation, water security, and disaster preparedness. This ambitious program is expected to enhance the resilience of the region and set a benchmark for environmental management.
