Residents Demand Probe into Tiruppur Waste Scandal

Residents in Tiruppur's Mudhalipalayam and Nallur areas are calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged misuse of ₹6.9 crore by a private entity responsible for municipal waste processing. Petitions detail the dumping of unsegregated waste into abandoned quarry pits across multiple locations, despite clear prohibitions from the Madras High Court and the National Green Tribunal. This practice has reportedly led to significant groundwater contamination from leachate, as confirmed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

The Tiruppur Corporation has faced substantial penalties, including a ₹3.5 crore fine, for violating Solid Waste Management Rules, which resulted in severe groundwater and air pollution due to toxic fumes from burning waste. This penalty underscores the alleged financial liability and criminal negligence by Corporation officials. Residents are seeking a DVAC probe to address public concerns regarding potential tender manipulation, misappropriation of funds, illegal dumping practices, and violations of environmental protection laws.

In response to these concerns, the Corporation has recently instructed its sanitary officers to strictly enforce standard operating procedures for waste collection from bulk generators. They have also emphasized the promotion of waste segregation at the source as a community initiative.
