Tiruppur Florets: 15,000 Saplings Revive Reservoir Basin
12 Sep
Summary
- 15,000 drought-resistant native trees planted in Orathupalayam reservoir.
- Project aims to remediate pollution and enhance carbon sequestration.
- Over a decade, 'Vanathukkul Tiruppur Project' raised 25 lakh trees.

Vetri Trust has planted 15,000 saplings of drought-resistant native tree species in the Orathupalayam reservoir basin. This significant afforestation drive, conducted on a 100-acre expanse cleared of invasive prosopis juliflora, is an extension of the 'Vanathukkul Tiruppur Project'. This initiative has successfully raised approximately 25 lakh trees over the past decade with a high survival rate.
The greening effort is seen as a reparation for historical pollution of the Orathupalayam dam by local dyeing and bleaching units, prior to the implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge systems. Environmental remediation efforts have notably reduced Total Dissolved Solid levels in the dam, making the water more manageable for agricultural use.
The project seeks to establish Tiruppur as a leader in carbon sequestration by transforming underutilized lands into green cover. Industrialists in the region are united in their commitment to environmental remediation, integrating these efforts with Tiruppur's global identity as a textile city known for its sustainable practices.
The planted species were identified by SACON and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, specifically chosen to support local bird populations and restore biodiversity along the Noyyal river. The afforestation event involved over 200 students from various educational institutions and residents from adjacent villages.
