A three-year-old tigress tragically lost its life on Thursday morning after being struck by a railway engine. The fatal incident occurred on the Gondia-Ballarshah railway line in Chandrapur district, between Sindewahi and Rajoli stations, as a train headed towards Gondia. The tigress sustained severe head injuries and died instantly.
The Chanda Fort-Gondia railway route is known to traverse a crucial tiger corridor. This corridor serves as a vital link between the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and other significant wildlife sanctuaries. Since 2001, this particular stretch of track has been the site of over 130 wild animal fatalities, including at least 19 tigers in recent years.
Wildlife activists have voiced concerns and are advocating for immediate safety measures. They propose a speed limit of 60 kmph during the day and 40 kmph after 6 pm for trains operating on this route. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court is reportedly monitoring the situation and has previously directed relevant departments to suggest remedial actions.
