Tigress Hirkani Joins Sahyadri Reserve for Breeding

The Maharashtra Forest Department has introduced an adult tigress, named Hirkani, into the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) as part of the Tiger Augmentation and Range Expansion (TARA) programme. This tigress was translocated from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh and released into the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary within STR.

Earlier efforts under the TARA programme saw two adult tigresses relocated from Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra to Chandoli National Park, part of STR. These introductions aim to increase the tiger population, thereby strengthening biodiversity and potentially boosting wildlife tourism.

Radio collars have been fitted to the newly released tigresses to enable continuous monitoring via satellite telemetry and VHF tracking. This ensures their safety and facilitates their integration into the wild ecosystem. Monitoring also includes field patrols, behavioral documentation, conflict avoidance protocols, and veterinary readiness.
