Tigress Dies En Route to Zoo Amidst Neglect Concerns
2 Aug
Summary
- Rescued tigress died 40 km before reaching Kanpur Zoo.
- Tigress had not received food for about a week prior to death.
- Leopard also died at Kanpur Zoo after a previous injury.

A tigress rescued from Bijnor's Amangarh Tiger Reserve tragically died approximately 40 km before reaching Kanpur Zoo on Saturday, August 2, 2026. The animal had been transported in a cage on a rescue truck for about 24 hours, a journey from which she did not recover.
Postmortem examinations revealed the tigress was severely underweight, having not eaten for around a week. She suffered from paralysis, worn-down teeth indicating an age of about 14 years, failed kidneys, and shrunken lungs. Viscera samples have been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly for further analysis.
Coincidentally, on the same Saturday, a female leopard housed at Kanpur Zoo died. This leopard had been brought from Bijnor in 2019 and had injured herself by biting off her tail in April 2026. Her tissue samples have also been sent to IVRI Bareilly for examination, with a three-member veterinary team conducting the postmortem.
