Tiger Returns to Gujarat After 33 Years!

After a hiatus of over three decades, a tiger has established a presence in Gujarat, taking up residence in the Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary. Forest department records indicate that tigers were believed to be extinct in the state since 1989, making this a momentous occasion. The arrival of this big cat has ignited hope for its potential re-establishment in Gujarat.

The tiger was first detected by CCTV cameras in February of this year within the Ratanmahal forest, situated in Dahod district. Forest personnel have been meticulously monitoring its movements for the past nine months, confirming its settlement. The animal appears to be in good health, and conservation efforts are underway, including the relocation of herbivore species to secure an adequate food supply for the tiger.

This development has been reported to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, seeking their guidance on subsequent actions. The re-emergence of the tiger in Gujarat, a state already known as the sole sanctuary for Asiatic lions, underscores its ecological diversity. This marks a significant shift, with Gujarat now being home to three of the big cat species: the lion, leopard, and tiger.
